School Location
hrough the MA in Special Education: Learning Disabilities program, you gain practical
teaching experience at the Lab School of Washington, an innovative day school
for children and adults with severe learning disabilities. Founded in 1967 by
Sally Smith, the school provides a rich learning environment in which students
learn by doing. The academic curriculum is grounded in the performing and visual
arts, which, Smith says, “ignite the whole learning process, especially for
children with learning disabilities.”

The Lab School of Washington, recognized by the US Department of Education
as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, has a diagnostic clinic, a tutor
corps, a career counseling unit, and after-school recreation programs for children
with learning disabilities. The program is approved by the District of Columbia,
which is a party to the National Association of State Directors of teacher Education
and Certification (NASDTEC) Interstate Contract.
