Students in the MFA program expand their critical, theoretical, historical, and
practical vocabularies by fully immersing themselves in a two-year curriculum.
American University’s unique program and new and spacious facilities allow
students to take advantage of private studios, close faculty contact, access to
respected visiting artists, and a city where museums and burgeoning art environment
provide wonderful resources and potential professional exhibition opportunities
(click on our alumni area to view more information).

What distinguishes American’s MFA program from that of most graduate schools
today is that we teach from our historical strength as a painting program. While
most students come to our program as painters, we encourage cross-disciplinary
study, which is evidenced by the fact that our alumni work in a wide variety
of media.
