The MFA Directing program provides early career directors with the opportunity to refine and enhance their technical skills and range, while cultivating their artistic identity and professional objectives. The program is individually designed with each student's artistic strengths and personal ambitions in mind. Its goals are to extend, intensify, and focus the director's theatrical technique, sensibilities, and imaginations; to explore and enhance their creative relationships with actors, designers, and playwrights; to envision possibilities for new artistic leadership in American theatre; and to consider the pragmatic aspects of the profession.

Students are prepared for substantive careers, either as resident or free-lance directors, with special emphasis on understanding the American regional theatre and other not-for-profit artistic venues.

The School of Theatre admits one student each year to the program, which is jointly sponsored by the School of Theatre and the Huntington Theatre Company. Students regularly interact with both the Boston University faculty and the Huntington staff and guest artists, including the Director of the School of Theatre, Jim Petosa, and the Huntington's Artistic Director, Nicholas Martin, who serves as the program's Master Teacher. Students have the opportunity to meet regularly with Boston's finest theatre artists, as well as with nationally acclaimed directors such as Mark Brokaw, Richard Nelson, and Darko Tresjnak.
