The Master of Arts Theological Studies (MATS) at Austin Presbyterian Theological
Seminary is a general academic degree which both enhances candidates’ basic
knowledge in each of the theological disciplines and allows for concentrated
study in a single discipline.
The Master of Arts Theological Studies degree is designed to achieve the following
goals:
- enhance general theological comprehension through a broad, foundational
course of study in the Biblical, Church’s Ministry, and Theological-
Historical departments;
- facilitate the development of more advanced comprehension through elective
credits for concentration in one of a number of suggested disciplines or through
a thematic sequence of courses crafted by the candidate in consultation with
his or her faculty advisor;
- strengthen candidates’ understanding of the theological bases of their
life and work in either church or secular settings; enhance communication,
educational, and worship leadership skills for those who may minister in congregations;
help prepare candidates for further graduate study; and
- provide ample opportunity for candidates to grow in spiritual depth, moral
integrity, and intellectual rigor.
THEOLOGICAL ARTS: A minimum of thirty credits in addition to the MATS
required courses are selected by the student in consultation with a faculty
advisor, and approved by the director.
