Masters degrees in History, General: A program that focuses on the general study and interpretation of the past, including the gathering, recording, synthesizing and criticizing of evidence and theories about past events. Includes instruction in historiography; historical research methods; studies of specific periods, issues and cultures; and applications to areas such as historic preservation, public policy, and records administration.

The MA in history is intended as either a terminal degree or a preliminary degree for those students who have been admitted to the program leading to the PhD in history. Students admitted to the MA program and desiring to advance to doctoral studies will be reevaluated by the Graduate Studies Committee before being admitted to the PhD program.
