About this School
Northern State University (NSU) is a four-year public university located in Aberdeen, South Dakota. NSU is governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents and offers 38 majors and 42 minors, as well as six associate, eight pre-professional and nine graduate degrees.

History
NSU traces its roots to 1889, when residents of Brown County successfully lobbied for an institute of higher educational. Twenty-three acres were donated by locals for campus on what was the southern edge of Aberdeen. Originally began as the Industrial Institute of South Dakota, a teacher preparation program was started in 1901 and the school changed became the Northern Normal and Industrial School. NSU was granted the right to award bachelor's degrees in 1920, becoming a senior teachers' college. In 1939, the State Legislature changed the name of the campus to Northern State Teachers College and the school got accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1940. The school grew rapidly after World War II, going from 1,200 to over 3,000 students, and the State Legislature changed the name once again to Northern State College in 1964. On February 6, 1989, the state of South Dakota passed legislation that made the school Northern State University.
