History
The school was established as the Rhode Island State Normal School in 1854 to prepare teachers. In 1898 RIC the school built a new building and officially became a teacher's college. By 1959 the school had built a new campus and was renamed Rhode Island College. RIC is the oldest of the three public universities in Rhode Island that operate under the supervision of the Board of Governors for Higher Education. The board consists of 13 individuals appointed by the governor and two members of the Rhode Island General Assembly.
