| Wilberforce University, located in Wilberforce, Ohio, was founded in 1856. It was the first university owned and operated by African-Americans, and is named for the 18th century English statesman and abolitionist William Wilberforce. Wilberforce University is affiliated with the A.M.E. Church and is a participant in the United Negro College Fund.
