Mission Statement
The Duke Philosophy major is designed:
(1) to acquaint students with the major periods and the major schools of thought in Western philosophy
(2) to give students practice in critically engaging the major ideas and figures of the tradition
(3) to introduce students to central areas of contemporary philosophy:
The curriculum is designed so that there is a wide array of courses available in logic; in the major periods in the history of philosophy; in ethics, political philosophy, and philosophy of law; and in metaphysics, epistemology, the philosophy of mind and the philosophy of science. Increasingly the department offers elective courses in non-Western, e.g., Chinese philosophy.
