The curriculum of the Department of Journalism seeks to achieve these goals:
1. To assure that students complete a broad-based core of liberal arts courses that will give them a foundation of understanding in, and the curiosity to learn more about, the world in which they live.
2. To ground students in the ethical, legal and historical traditions of journalism and to help them explore contemporary challenges to those traditions.
3. To teach students how to gather and analyze information accurately, efficiently and intelligently in an increasingly technological world.
4. To teach students how to think critically and to write about events and issues clearly, succinctly, and in context.
5. To teach students the value of revision and the craft of story-telling.
6. To develop students' respect for diversity and individuality in order that their reporting can reflect understanding of a society of varied lifestyles and cultures.
