What We Emphasize
  • Small class sizes and extensive faculty interaction.
  • The taking of courses of interest outside of the field.
  • The understanding of the causes of crime and delinquency.
  • Societal reaction to crime and delinquency.
  • The extent of problems, and possible ways your generation can cope with the problems.
  • Instill in you the ability to understand social policy, to critically assess proposed programs, and to recognize the complexity of crime-related issues.
  • Creating your own solutions, rather than relying on failed programs of the past.

    How We Teach
  • There are approximately 75 students majoring in criminology.
  • All the full-time faculty members in our department have a Ph.D degree and most have professional experience as well.
  • There will be lectures and extensive discussions inside the classrooms and you views will be sought frequently.
  • Outside activities include field trips and mock trials which are always favorites of the students.

    Who Will Succeed
  • Criminology majors should be bright, serious, hard-working and able to deal with complex data and issues.
  • Criminology majors should also be willing and able to cope with the frustrations -- intellectual and emotional -- associated with the profound set of difficulties posed by crime and delinquency.
  • You'll gain, in return, the pride of knowing that your accomplishments are essential to our society.

    How It Will Benefit You
  • Our first-year graduates do very well in the work force.
  • Most of our graduates go to local, state or national agencies, while some continue their schooling at criminal justice agencies, law schools or other graduate schools.

    How Our Major Works
  • In addition to your criminology major, your supportive courses allow you to specialize in other disciplines of interest that fit your career goals.
  • For example, certain business and management courses are recommended for those who want to work in agencies or government.
  • Those who will seek careers in a therapeutic setting typically take psychology courses.
  • Those who want to specialize in the problems of adolescents and children may choose from several education courses.
