Becoming a Paralegal Online
Do you want to become a paralegal? The demand for paralegals is projected to increase, with about 39,000 new paralegal jobs between 2018 and 2028 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, n.d.). With the right education and experience, a paralegal can specialize in an area of law that interests them. There are a variety of educational programs available for those wanting to go into this field, including certificate and degree programs. Many students choose the certificate program over degree because it is more career-focused. Plus it takes only a few months to complete.
Liberty University offers an Undergraduate Certificate in Paralegal Studies. This program offers eight-week classes, and students complete it in an average of one year. They have several start dates over the year and have a very flexible schedule (Liberty University, n.d.). Liberty University offers a Bachelor in Paralegal Studies degree as well. This program lasts an average of 3 ½ years and allows for a move into higher up positions.
Keiser University offers an Associate of Arts in Paralegal Studies online. This allows a student to earn their certificate through solely online classes or a hybrid experience including both in-person and online courses (Keiser University, n.d.). This program takes approximately two years to complete. Coursework will include criminal law, real property, legal research and writing. As well as courses about the court system and pleading requirements.
The program offered at Ashworth College can be completed in as little as four months. They offer specialization as well. This allows you to choose between Criminal Law & Procedure, Civil Litigation, or Real Estate Law (Ashworth College, n.d.). Courses you will take include courses in criminal, contract, civil, corporate, property, and family law, as well as how to gain employment and earn your continuing legal education credits.
University of Providence
The University of Providence offers an ABA (American Bar Association) approved program. (University of Providence, n.d.). They offer both an Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Paralegal Studies, depending upon the time you want to invest. Their program requires an internship, which means you will get real-world experience working in a law firm, judge’s office, or corporation.
Bryant & Stratton College
The online Associate in Applied Science Paralegal degree offered at Bryant & Stratton College takes approximately two years (Bryant & Stratton College, n.d.). This course allows you to gain the knowledge necessary to take the CLA/CP exam successfully. Some courses you will take include Torts & Remedies, Contract Law, Civil Litigation, and more.

It will allow you to gain the knowledge needed to be successful in the legal field. From a certificate to an associate degree to a bachelor degree, depending upon your desired time investment, you can find an online program. Do your research to find the right program for you, your budget, and the amount of time you want to invest.
