Educational and Economical Impacts of Covid-19
The Covid-19 virus has and continues to affect us all. Either you have had the virus yourself or know someone who did. It continues to impact the world from a health standpoint and also economically, since most countries have shut down their economy and quarantined the population. The number of people who have contracted the virus and the amount of deaths is staggering.
Covid- 19 Background
Covid-19 originated in Wuhan China and then spread worldwide, getting labeled as a pandemic. Initially, the virus appeared to be similar to the flu. It was then determined that it spreads very quickly and attacks the respiratory system. The first case was reported on December 31, 2019 and a public health emergency was declared on January 30, 2020. Many countries, such as Italy, were hit very hard with a great number of people infected. There were many deaths resulting from the inability to address the volume of cases. The United States also has a great deal of infections but we are addressing all issues and learning more about the virus each day.
Covid- 19 Symptoms
The most common symptoms are fever, cough, and loss of taste and smell. Many people never exhibit any symptoms or get the virus itself, but they can still spread the virus to others. This categorizes them as asymptomatic carriers. Diagnosing has been a challenge and the United States has implemented a great deal of testing to help identify all carriers of the virus and quarantine them accordingly.
Economical Effects of Covid- 19
Since the United States had to shut down the economy and quarantine, many companies had to quickly execute work-from-home procedures so that their businesses could continue to operate. It was very difficult in the beginning but due to technology advances, they were able to quickly adapt. Fortunately, many businesses are now efficiently working even though they are not physically located in the office. It has shown many companies that their employees can still be productive even though they are working from their homes.
Educational Effects of Covid- 19
Schools and universities across the country began to implement the same type of procedure in order for students to learn remotely. It was a bit more difficult considering most schools are in-person. Instructors rely on that in-person interaction to get the message across to students. The universities that had remote learning programs found it a bit easier from a technology standpoint. Their web based programs were already in place and functioning, so the most difficult part was transitioning in-person classes to online classes. It’s been difficult for some instructors to adjust to remote learning. However, presently all schools and universities are doing some form of remote learning since it has been mandated that they close.
Outcome of Covid- 19
Since remote learning during this time has shown to be effective, there are many who say this type of education may become more prevalent in the future. There are others who still feel that the classroom experience is a more effective way of education. The future is unclear in that respect, but we will get through this pandemic and grow stronger as a result.
