Choose equipment and read product identifiers
Estimated study time. Take the time you need.
What you will learn
- Match a measurement or delivery device to its stated route and product.
- Distinguish NDC, lot number and expiration date.
- Identify an incomplete device or package match before processing continues.
Before you start
Review forms, routes and concentrations. Device choice is product-specific; this lesson teaches recognition and verification, not unsupervised administration or sterile preparation.
A measured amount still needs the right device
An oral syringe measures an oral liquid; it is not interchangeable with an injectable syringe simply because both have markings. A household spoon is not a calibrated medication-measuring device. Select the appropriate device and graduations for the supplied volume through the pharmacy's approved process.
For an invented 0.5 mL oral-liquid dose, a device whose readable markings cannot distinguish that volume is a poor match. Change the amount to 10 mL: the required capacity changes. Both precision and capacity matter; “the largest syringe available” is not a universal rule.
Insulin devices must match the product and instructions. Needles, injection devices and sharps handling require the correct trained workflow. Do not convert an insulin pen into a vial-handling process based on an arithmetic example.
Respiratory and other supplies have compatibility rules
A spacer is an accessory used with compatible inhalers to assist delivery; it is not automatically appropriate for every inhaler type. A nebulizer uses its specified solution and device components. Check product instructions instead of assuming that all inhaled medicines share equipment.
Likewise, a filter, diluent, syringe or immunization supply must be compatible with the intended product and route. A filter is not a universal fix for an incorrect or contaminated preparation. Missing compatibility information requires clarification.
Pause and predict
A worker has the correct liquid amount but the wrong route-specific device. Is the calculation enough to proceed?
Answer: Check your reasoning
No. The amount can be correct while the delivery method is unsuitable. Verify the exact product, route and compatible equipment before the authorized preparation or dispensing step.
Three identifiers answer different questions
The NDC is a three-segment drug identifier associated with labeler, product and package information. A lot number identifies a batch. An expiration date identifies a labeled time limit under specified storage. None substitutes for the others.
FDA's NDC directory includes listed approved and unapproved products. An NDC is not itself proof of FDA approval or reimbursement eligibility. Do not add digits or change formatting from memory to make a claim process; use the verified product identifier and current system requirements.
In a fictional exercise, two bottles have the same product/package identifier but lots K1 and K2. A notice names only K1. You need the lot comparison to determine the stated scope. The shared NDC alone cannot distinguish those batches.
Try it without the walkthrough
1. A fictional oral-liquid amount is 0.4 mL. A supplied device only has 5 mL increments. Which measurement problem should be flagged?
2. A label has an NDC, lot R8 and an expiration date. Which field is most directly needed to match a batch-specific recall?
3. A respiratory device has the correct brand family but is not listed as compatible with the supplied medicine. What should happen next?
Answer: Check your reasoning
1. The graduations cannot adequately resolve the stated small volume. Obtain an appropriate route-specific measuring device through the approved process.
2. The lot number, while also matching the product and other identifiers named in the notice.
3. Verify exact product/device compatibility and obtain pharmacist guidance. Brand-family familiarity does not establish a match.
Keep this pattern
Correct amount + correct route + compatible device are separate requirements. Product identifier, batch and date also remain separate.
