Famous graduates include producer/director Jerry Bruckheimer, former Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall, former U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona, reality star Kourtney Kardashian, pro basketball player Luke Walton, journalist Geraldo Rivera, and Sesame Street co-creator Joan Ganz Cooney. While recuperating at a veteran’s hospital in Tucson, politician Bob Dole took classes at the university before heading back to his home state of Kansas. Presidential candidate Barry Goldwater belonged to Sigma Chi fraternity during his time as a UA student.

Tucson is part of the Sonoran Desert located in Southern Arizona and surrounded by five mountain ranges. The 392-acre campus features plenty of cacti and some 500 tree species, including olive trees planted in 1895. In the clock tower of The Student Union Memorial Center sits a bell from the USS Arizona battleship that sank at Pearl Harbor. Students hang out at the popular patio and porch areas of Old Main, the university’s first building.

The Wildcats compete in 20 NCAA Division I sports in the Pac-12 Conference. They range from the traditional (football and basketball) to the slightly more unusual (sand volleyball). Of the school’s 21 national championships, four have been in baseball and eight were in softball. In 2008, both the men’s and the women’s swimming and diving teams took top honors in the nation.
