The campus offers a mix of historic Tuscan architecture with cutting-edge interior facilities. It sits against the stunning backdrop of the Flatirons formation of the Rocky Mountains and features a large outdoor theatre for performances. All students are required to live on campus for their first two semesters in one of the university’s 23 on-campus residence halls. Residence halls offer several Living and Learning Communities such as the Active Living community where students who strive for health in body and mind go on planned hiking, biking, skiing, and rock climbing adventures. Also right on campus is the Fiske Planetarium featuring star and laser shows and the Sommers-Bausch Observatory for those who wish to take stargazing to the next level.

The university boasts the slogan “Be Boulder Anywhere” and has offered distance education opportunities for over four decades. Fully online graduate programs and dual degree programs are available in electrical engineering, telecommunications, computer science, aerospace engineering, and engineering management. Graduate certificate programs are available in various engineering specialties as well as telecommunications and renewable and sustainable energy. The Office of Continuing Education also offers evening, weekend, and online individual course options ideal for adult learners.

The Buffaloes are NCAA Division I and members of the Pacific 12 Conference. Since 1959 the Buffaloes have won 24 NCAA championships,17 of which were for skiing. Buffaloes Football has participated in 28 NCAA Division I bowl games and secured 12 wins. Rashaan Salaam received the Heisman Trophy in 1994 and is to date the only alumnus to have received this honor.

The University of Colorado Boulder is widely known as a leading public research university and houses 11 research institutes and 90 research centers on campus. The university receives more funding from NASA for student and faculty research initiatives than any other university worldwide. In 1995 Professor Carl E. Weiman and National Institute of Standards and Technology Senior Scientist Eric A. Cornell produced a new form of matter called the Bose–Einstein condensate in the campus’ Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics.
