Summary
What makes New York University unique?

New York University, or NYU, is a private university that was chartered in 1831 by the New York State Legislature in an effort led by Alber Gallatin, with a total undergraduate enrollment of just over 25,000. NYU is situated in an urban setting on a campus that takes up over 171 buildings in the vibrant city of New York. NYU receives the most applications of any private institution in the United States and can be very difficult to get into given the competition. The school’s colors are violet and white, which lends itself to their nickname “The Violets.”

Located in the heart of Manhattan, NYU is made up of ten schools and prestigious programs including the nationally-ranked Stern School of Business and the Silver School of Social Work. Students take classes on a semester-based academic calendar and NYU tends to offer intimate undergraduate classes of 20 students or fewer, which can be perfect for students that prefer small group learning over the traditional large lecture format.

NYU has produced many successful alumni, including current U.S. Senators, former Federal Reserve Chairmen, and even Academy Award winners. NYU’s urban location on Washington Square and Greenwich Village has been a cultural hub for over a century, with famous artists in residence including Edward Hopper and Bob Dylan. Noble alumni at NYU include film director Martin Scorsese, fashion icon Tom Ford, and former mayor of New York City Rudy Giuliani.

Not surprisingly, given its proximity to the thriving New York City arts scene, NYU has graduates who have made their mark in the entertainment industry. Some of its alumni include Academy Award winners like Woody Allen, Whoopi Goldberg, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Oliver Stone, and Angelina Jolie. In the music world, some of the grads include Arista Records founder Clive Davis, Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons, composer Louise Talma, and singer Mary Wilson from The Supremes. The school also boasts graduates who have made their mark with the written word, such as Pulitzer Prize winners Doug Wright (Drama, 2004), Charles Simic (Poetry, 1990), Gene Weingarten (Feature Writing, 2008 and 2010), and Michael Gartner (Editorial Writing, 2001).

Question
What is the campus setting like?
1 Answer
Answered by: Universities.com

Located in the heart of Manhattan, New York University students live and study in the city’s bustling and artistic Greenwich Village neighborhood. The school has 21 residence halls around Manhattan and two in Brooklyn that house about 44 percent of students. Those who live on campus can choose a traditional residence hall setting or apartment-style halls that have communal kitchens. In addition, there are special-interest housing options, including the international house at Palladium Hall, which is a suite where international students can live together and share their unique experiences. If you’re passionate about Mother Earth, you can choose the Green House community, where students maintain an environment designed to shrink their carbon footprint. Get ready to compost!

New York University has centers and institutes that conduct research, offer lectures and seminars, and provide training that spans a diverse range of academic disciplines. For example, NYU Africa House is an institute that focuses on studying the historical, economic, and cultural issues of the continent and how those issues impact the rest of the world. As well, the Center for Brain Health conducts research on brain science topics such as memory loss, cognition, and neuropsychology. And, the Center for the Study and Treatment of Pain focuses on clinical research and trials related to pain management. NYU faculty members are making great strides in scientific discovery. For example, computer science and engineering professor Rumi Chunara is studying the relationship between public health and Big Data, using social media to track health problems like obesity rates and the spread of infectious diseases. Also, John T. McDevitt, professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, has won a Popular Science award for developing a programmable bio-nano-chip system designed to diagnose cancer.
