UMBC has an impressive list of alumni whose post-collegiate endeavors span a variety of fields. Among the graduates are Associated Black Charities President and CEO Diane Bell-McKoy, chess grandmaster Pascal Charbonneau, Baltimore Orioles pitcher Zach Clark, Clemson University President James Clements, pastry chef/Food Network star Duff Goldman, Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, and actress Kathleen Turner.

Situated on 500 acres with a Baltimore address, the university, founded in the 1960s, is a collection of late 20th and early 21st century architecture. The campus boasts the Albin O. Kuhn Library and Gallery, the research center for the UMBC community and one of the principal art galleries in the region. To get to class, students walk down Academic Row, the central walkway. And for good luck after orientation, students head to the dining hall to rub the statue of the school’s mascot, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever named True Grit. Adventures off campus are easily achievable—UMBC lies 15 minutes from the Baltimore Inner Harbor and 30 minutes from Washington, D.C.

Online learning is just a click away. Non-credit courses at the English language institute prepare students in university-level writing, grammar, reading and vocabulary. Undergrads may choose from a number of courses available when they are. Graduate programs in information systems, emergency management, instructional systems development, and art in education prepare professionals to advance in their careers while continuing their post-baccalaureate educations. Adults may explore artificial intelligence, databases and machine learning in free courses offered by the university.

The UMBC Retrievers participate in the America East Conference, which includes schools such as the University of Hartford, University of Maine, University of New Hampshire, and the University of Vermont. More than 400 student-athletes compete in 19 NCAA Division I sports. You can cheer them on wearing black and gold at the 4,500-seat stadium and track and field complex, 4,000-seat Retriever Activities Center (RAC) Arena, indoor and outdoor aquatics complex, tennis courts, soccer stadium or baseball and softball fields.

The university in divided into three colleges (natural and mathematical sciences, engineering and information technology, and arts, humanities, and social sciences) offering 48 majors, 38 minors, 25 certificate and 13 pre-professional programs in its undergraduate program. UMBC is among the fastest-growing research universities in the country, with 20 campus-wide centers and institutes. The grounds are minutes from bwtech@UMBC Research and Technology Park, the first university research park in the state housing three incubators in cybersecurity, life sciences, and clean technology.
