Questions & Answers
Question
Who are the notable alumni?
1 Answer
Answered by: Universities.com

Country star Garth Brooks, professional golfer Rickie Fowler, law professor Anita Hill, businessman T. Boone Pickens, and football coach Houston Nutt are among the talented people who went to OSU.

Question
What is the campus setting like?
1 Answer
Answered by: Universities.com

The 700+-acre main campus is located in Stillwater, a city in north-central Oklahoma that is about 60 miles from both Oklahoma City and Tulsa (sites of two smaller OSU campuses). The Stillwater campus features Georgian architecture among a picturesque landscape of flowers, trees, and shrubs (and even cowboy hat-shaped topiary). Structures such as Old Central -- the university’s first permanent academic building -- remind people of the university’s long history, while state-of-the-art Boone Pickens Stadium displays OSU’s progression.

Question
What are the online learning and extension/adult learning opportunities?
1 Answer
Answered by: Universities.com

As a public land-grant institution, OSU is committed to bringing educational opportunities to state residents regardless of their location. Its Graduate College offers a variety of advanced degrees and certificates that can be completed online, from business and engineering to agriculture and nutritional science. Programs also exist for working professionals who haven’t finished their undergraduate degree.

Question
What are the athletic highlights?
1 Answer
Answered by: Universities.com

The OSU Cowboys and Cowgirls athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I Big 12 Conference and have enjoyed great success through the years. Under coach Henry Iba, Oklahoma State (then known as Oklahoma A&M) became the first school to win consecutive NCAA championships in men’s basketball (1945-46). Oklahoma State wrestling is the winningest program in the history of college athletics with 34 (and counting) NCAA team championships. Barry Sanders won the Heisman Trophy while playing football for OSU in 1988, and Robin Ventura set college baseball's hitting-streak record (58 games) and batted .428 during his career as a Cowboy before being drafted by the Chicago White Sox. The Cowgirls have appeared in the Women’s College World Series seven times. Two of the campus’s newest sports – women’s soccer and equestrian – are already on their way to continuing the tradition of excellence.

Question
What are the school's academic highlights?
1 Answer
Answered by: Universities.com

OSU has academic programs to suit virtually every need. The most popular undergraduate majors include business, engineering, agriculture (it is a land-grant institution, after all), family and consumer sciences, and biological sciences. The College of Education is particularly known for excellence in graduate-level vocational/technical training. The veterinary education program is recognized nationally as being an excellent value for the cost.

Question
How are the career opportunities for college graduates in this city?
1 Answer
Answered by: Universities.com

Stillwater’s population has increased by more than 20 percent since the year 2000. In fact, Forbes.com ranks Stillwater among the Top 10 fastest-growing small cities in the United States. Employers are drawn to the area because of its educated pool of candidates and the low cost of doing business in Oklahoma compared to other states.

Question
What major companies/industries are hiring what type of graduates/skills in this city?
1 Answer
Answered by: Universities.com

With well over 6,000 employees, Oklahoma State University is by far the largest employer in Stillwater. Graduates in the health sciences often find employment at Stillwater Medical Center, while educators are in demand in the city’s public school system. Wal-Mart, the City of Stillwater, Mercury Marine, and Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education also do a significant amount of hiring.

Question
Is this city more of a college town or a great place to start a career and family?
1 Answer
Answered by: Universities.com

Oklahoma State University and its 26,000 students give Stillwater much of its character, but the area also is a great place to establish a permanent residence. In fact, CNN/Money listed Stillwater as one of “America’s Best Small Cities.” Residents are attracted by the low cost of living, good employment prospects, and convenient shopping. Stillwater also has an interesting vibe from the intellectual atmosphere of the university to the music scene—Stillwater is the home of red dirt music – a mixture of rock, country, folk, and blues.

Question
What do the locals in this city like to do for fun?
1 Answer
Answered by: Universities.com

As the OSU marching band plays “The Waving Song” after a Cowboy touchdown, residents and students alike love to wave their right arms in the air to create an image similar to wheat blowing in the wind. Those who enjoy being active take advantage of the city’s three pickleball courts, outdoor skating and skateboarding rinks, and dog park. You can find yourself attending the October’s annual Mummy & Son Dance to April’s Stillwater Arts Festival.

Question
What's the dating scene like in this city? Will I meet my perfect mate?
1 Answer
Answered by: Universities.com

At both Oklahoma State University and in the town of Stillwater, gender distribution is about equal. Your ideal match could be waiting at the next Cowboy basketball game at Gallagher-Iba Arena (also known as “The Rowdiest Arena in the Country”). Or you may bump into each other during OSU’s nine-day Homecoming celebration.
