Logistics and materials management is part of supply chain management, which is the movement of products and materials from one location to another. This degree program provides instruction in purchasing procedures, supply chain management, logistics management, accounting, business-to-business marketing, and inventory control. Other courses include storage methods, use of material handling equipment, receiving and stock handling, stock-keeping, shipping, human relations, quality control, entrepreneurship, and budgeting. Coursework teaches students how to develop and maintain business relationships with suppliers and customers, work to understand customers? needs and how to meet them, and design strategies to minimize the cost or time required to move goods.
Logistics and materials managers arrange the transportation of raw materials, supplies, and finished goods through domestic and international transportation channels. They also oversee purchasing, shipping, inventory, and delivery. Individuals will find work with businesses engaged in manufacturing, transportation, wholesaling, and retailing goods. Job titles for logistics and material management degree holders include transportation managers, warehouse managers, storage and distribution managers, logistic managers, and logistic administrators. Logisticians had an annual median pay of $70,800 in 2010. Logisticians must stay current on advances in logistics technology and incorporate new technological procedures to better assist customers and suppliers.
