Radiologic technology is a field in health care and medicine that requires specialization in computed tomography, x-ray, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment, which are all used to take images of a body?s insides. Students should have excellent mathematics and science skills because coursework includes anatomy, physiology, biology, patient care, ethics and law in diagnostic imaging, pathology, radiation physics and protection, and exposure principles. Students receive classroom instruction as well as clinical training, learn how to adjust and maintain imaging equipment, and prepare patients for procedures.
Radiologic technologists must follow orders from physicians, operate the computerized equipment to take the necessary images, and keep detailed records. More than 60 percent of technologists are employed by state, local, and private hospitals. However, other areas for employment include doctors? offices, federal government, outpatient care centers, and medical laboratories. Students with a degree in radiologic technology will be qualified to work as imaging specialists, sonography technologists, lab assistants, chemotherapy specialists, and MR technologists. The annual median pay was $54,340 in 2010. An associate degree is the most common degree for radiologic technologists, and they must be licensed; requirements vary by state. Individuals should also think about attaining certification since employers prefer certified technologists. Specialization in certain areas of radiologic technology can also increase employment alternatives.
