Common courses are human anatomy, biology, physiology, ultrasound techniques, and algebra. Training includes a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on lab practice. The profession requires critical thinking skills, excellent judgment, and the ability to provide appropriate health care services. Diagnostic medical sonographers may specialize in obstetric and gynecologic sonography, abdominal sonography, neurosonography, breast sonography, vascular sonography, and cardiac sonography. In addition to generating images, other duties include taking measurements, calculating values, and analyzing results.
