Mention Kent State University and many people will remember immediately the headline-making incident in 1970 in which Ohio National Guardsmen killed four Kent State students during a Vietnam War protest. To have something positive come from that tragedy, the university created the Center for Applied Conflict Management. Today, more than a thousand students per year take courses that teach applied skills in conflict management and nonviolent change. The class Intro to Conflict Management has developed into a popular way to satisfy Kent’s core and diversity requirements. Other undergrads hone their training in negotiation, mediation, and strategic planning by pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in applied conflict management. Many put their skills to good use and get a jump-start on potential future employment by holding an internship junior or senior year. Students have gained hands-on experience working and observing at places such as the American Civil Liberties Union, the Cleveland Mediation Center, and the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. Responding to the interest for graduate-level training, Kent State created a track in the discipline in the political science Ph.D. program in 2013.

Actor and comedian Arsenio Hall, “Funky Winkerbean” cartoonist Tom Batiuk, Broadway actress and singer Alice Ripley, and classical record producer Robert Woods all graduated from Kent State. The school also has seen its share of future sports greats, including legendary college football coach Lou Holtz, NFL linebacker James Harrison, and golfer Ben Curtis. Price is Right host Drew Carey, writer David Sedaris, and actor Michael Keaton all spent time at Kent but did not graduate.
The main campus covers more than 860 acres on the banks of the Cuyahoga River in Kent, Ohio, about 40 miles south of Cleveland. A massive campus transformation effort in recent years has resulted in many new buildings, substantial facility upgrades, and more continuous green space in which students can casually hang out. The Kent Student Center remains at the heart of campus. Along with meeting and conference rooms, the popular building houses a bookstore, charging stations, and a cyber café. And rest assured, alumni, “The Nest” still contains rockers, soft couches, and beanbag chairs to chill on.
In line with its commitment to providing quality education throughout Ohio, Kent operates seven regional facilities in addition to the main campus. The institution also conducts a variety of online undergraduate programs designed to help healthcare professionals advance their careers, including an RN to BSN program for nurses. Other online offerings at the associate or bachelor level include computer technology, insurance studies, and environment management. Online graduate and certificate programs span many disciplines, from art education to geographic information science.
The Kent State Golden Flash compete in NCAA Division I in the Mid-American Conference. The baseball team made its first trip to the College World Series tournament in 2012, while the football team received national attention by playing in the GoDaddy.com Bowl in 2013. The school takes particular pride in winning the Cartwright Award for excellence in athletics, academics, and citizenship. For the 2012-13 school year, 62 percent of Kent State student-athletes achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The university also holds the distinction of being the only school in Ohio with an air traffic control program. Its state-of-the-art simulation laboratory enables students to practice skills necessary for every phase of a flight, from takeoff through landing. Nationally, Kent receives high marks for its graduate programs in audiology and rehabilitation counseling.
