Incorporating new techniques for social work has become the focus of the University of Buffalo's highly ranked School of Social Work. Social work is evolving to reflect both human rights issues as well as trauma-induced issues, and the UB social work program has changed to emphasize both of them. Students learn how to diagnose trauma-induced events in their clients' pasts to help them through the current situations the clients face. The State University of New York-Buffalo School of Social Work provides several dual degree programs, such as a Master of Business Administration and social work degree or a Juris Doctor law degree and a social work degree, to give students experiences beyond social work during the education process, which can open some interesting employment opportunities. International study programs are available around the world, including in Moldova and Brazil. Coupled with desirable internships at local charitable organizations and governmental agencies, along with a revamped curriculum, those in the Buffalo social work program receive cutting-edge preparation for their careers.
The school offers a range of experiences, from classes that incorporated globally-oriented curricula, to international social work courses, to winter session trips abroad, to semester-long field placements in other regions of the country and the world. The school fosters an environment of possibility.
I am helping to coordinate a program for women involved in the court system, and this population has a very high rate of trauma exposure. While most of the professionals I am working with are brand new to trauma-informed care and its principles, I am able to bring knowledge of how our clients are impacted by their past experiences and how to provide services that are trauma-informed because of my education at UB.
Opportunities such as Social Work Lobby Day in Albany, monthly opportunities to support the homeless at a local food pantry, and working with the elderly as well as Buffalo's large refugee population are only a few of the numerous additional opportunities available for students to form relationships.
