A public, nonprofit institution that was founded in 1861 by Daniel Bagley and Arthur Denny as a research institution. The University of Washington is one of the oldest universities on the West Coast. Filled with brick buildings, large trees and open, grassy areas, the campus sits on the shores of the Union and Portage Bays in the heart of Seattle with mountain views to the east and west. Its four campuses are connected by Red Square, a central hub for student activities, meetings and events. For fun, students head over to University Way, referred to simply as “The Ave,” an 8-block food court with tastes from around the world.

UW is the home of the Huskies. Its teams compete in the NCAA Division I and Pac-12 Conference. The UW football team won the1960 and 1991 national title along with eight Rose Bowl victories and an Orange Bowl title. From 1907 to 1917, Washington football teams were unbeaten in 64 consecutive games, an NCAA record. In the last 15 years, the UW basketball team made it to six NCAA tournaments and two sweet sixteen tournaments. The rowing, softball, cross-country and volleyball teams also claimed recent title victories.
