Best Industrial and Product Design colleges in the U.S. 2023

Industrial design is the process of conceptualizing, engineering, and manufacturing products like shoes or furniture. These specialists combine digital and tangible art to model and alter a concept design before it is ready to be engineered and built in a factory. Industrial design requires technical and creative ambition in order to progress and succeed in the job market.

Industrial designers can work in a variety of sectors and design all types of products including vehicles, water bottles, and pencils. Professionals in this field require advanced sketching skills to be able to communicate a concept on paper and in digital form through computer rendering programs.

In order to become an industrial designer, students need a four-year bachelor’s degree, though most also earn a master’s degree to remain competitive in the job market. Many programs are offered online given the digital nature of the role, but some of the most reputable programs in the U.S. are in-person. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that opportunities in this field will grow by six percent in the next decade, a much higher growth rate than other professions.
