Anyone can rub someone’s shoulders, but with a degree in massage therapy, students learn about the anatomy and physiology of the body and participate in hours of hands on training so they are equipped to properly treat their patients and clients. Massage has been shown to induce beneficial outcomes for a variety of health disorders from anxiety to migraines and even chronic pain. It is growing in popularity, and some health insurance companies even cover the service now.
There are several different education routes for massage therapy. One of the more popular routes is through a two-year or shorter vocational program at a school that offers massage therapy degrees. There are, however, bachelor’s and master’s programs available at larger universities, though they may be harder to find. Coursework can include introduction to massage, kinesiology, and classes in different massage techniques such as Shiatsu and Swedish massage.
